Binance estimates the impact of a security incident at about $6.3 billion. Its initial investigation suggested a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop may have enabled unauthorized withdrawals through a service container. The exchange said it had found no evidence of a wallet private-key leak.

Binance said partners had frozen approximately $3 billion onchain and that the company and its SAFU fund would cover losses. Its initial update described temporary deposit and withdrawal suspensions while checks continued. Both the investigation and recovery were ongoing at the time of that update.

The incident illustrates that custody risk extends beyond private keys to the systems and people authorized to initiate withdrawals. Freezing assets can support recovery, but the amount frozen is not the same as the amount ultimately recovered. Operators should distinguish incident estimates from confirmed final losses.
