EIP-8450 separates quantum preparation from the signature switch

A draft validator-key registry would prepare future migration without immediately changing how consensus messages are authenticated.

Draft EIP-8450 proposes registering dormant post-quantum validator keys before a later signature transition. The registry would associate keys with existing validators; the registration fork would leave current BLS authentication in place. This is a proposal, not a deployed protection.

Separating preparation from activation gives staking operations a different planning problem. Tooling, custody and coordination can be evaluated before those keys carry live signing duties, instead of compressing every operational change into one transition.

A registry also needs to be interpreted carefully. Recording a public key is not the same as proving that an operator can reliably use its corresponding signing system under production conditions.

For builders assessing Ethereum’s roadmap, the useful signal is concrete migration design. Teams can follow review and implementation work while avoiding claims that the network has already completed a post-quantum transition.
