Ethereum says experts gathered in Cambridge to coordinate research into quantum-resistant cryptography. Its October 31 announcement describes quantum computing as a threat to current blockchain cryptography and says advances in AI are compressing estimates of the threat’s timeline.

For builders, the useful question is how a future cryptographic transition would reach existing wallets and applications. An inventory of signing dependencies, upgrade paths and long-lived credentials can make that discussion concrete without treating a research announcement as a migration instruction.

The post does not establish an activation date or say that Ethereum has already replaced its signatures. Planning should distinguish the research agenda, any eventual protocol proposal and the separate work required to update user-facing software.
