Mastercard says Shop Pay is using Mastercard Agent Pay for agentic commerce, with agentic tokens intended to keep card details from being exposed during shopping. Its announcement points to an emerging checkout pattern for software acting on a customer’s behalf.

The post does not establish transaction volumes, universal merchant availability or a particular customer’s approval settings. Those details matter because a payment credential and a user’s authorization to spend are separate parts of a checkout flow.

For product teams, the practical questions include how permissions are granted, limited and revoked, and how users review purchases. Tokenization can protect card data, but it does not by itself settle those experience and control questions.
