Stablecoin-backed cards move from balances to the checkout
Marqeta and Coinbase are expanding their collaboration around enterprise cards, with Base providing the on-chain settlement infrastructure.

Marqeta announced an expanded collaboration with Coinbase on October 16 to support stablecoin-backed cards for enterprise customers. The proposed experience connects a stablecoin balance with spending at merchants that accept payment cards.
The companies describe a division of responsibilities. Coinbase supplies custody and conversion between digital assets and traditional currency. Base provides on-chain settlement infrastructure. Marqeta handles card issuance, processing, and relationships with banks and payment networks. The announcement also describes round-the-clock funding of card programs.
This is a useful distinction for Ethereum product teams: the blockchain is one component in a wider payment service. A familiar checkout experience still depends on custodians, issuing arrangements and operational support.
ETH Canal perspective: product discovery should follow the customer through the full lifecycle, including a declined transaction, a refund and an account restriction. The announcement describes intended capabilities; it does not establish that every program or geography has launched. Teams evaluating it should ask for their own eligibility, rollout and servicing details before promising availability to customers.
